The City of Youngstown is named for John Young, who first surveyed the area in 1796. Young purchased the entire township from the Western Reserve Land Company. When coal was found in the area in the 1800, it put the area on a fast growth track. Later the steel mills became a mainstay to the area. Today the area has many metal works and auto supplier industries. The downtown area has seen a re-growth and continues to attract new startup businesses.
